The National Council of Women of Thailand (NCWT), under the Royal Patronage of Her Majesty the Queen, was established on September 9, 1956. NCWT has been under the Royal Patronage of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit since May 5, 1961, and became a member of the International Council of Women (ICW) in 1960. NCWT was accepted to the International Consumer Organization (CI) and the Southeast Asia Women Association (ACWO) in 1973 and 1980, respectively. In 2001, NCWT was appointed to be an advisor to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nation (ECOSOC).
Administration of the National Council of Women of Thailand consists of women associations, which are member organizations, and the Board of Directors whom are elected by the general assembly every 3 years. NCWT has four types of memberships as described below:
1. Ordinary Member - Any women organization or association which has been accepted by at least 2/3 of votes from Board of Director present at the meeting, and must have the following qualifications:
- Is a juristic entity by law
- Has been established for at least 1 year
- Has more than 100 members
- Have objectives which do not contradict with NCWT?s objectives.
2. Special Member - Any women organization which has been approved by 3/4 of votes from the Board of Directors present at the meeting, and must have the following qualifications:
- The main objective of the organization is related to women and society.
- Has been established for at least 1 year
- Have objectives which do not contradict with NCWT?s objectives
3. Auxiliary Member - Any qualified woman who has been unanimously approved by the Board of Directors.
4. Honorary Member - Any former president of NCWT who has been unanimously approved by the Board of Directors.
The 24nd Board of Directors of NCWT will uphold Her Majesty the Queen?s speech as guidelines in achieving the goals in women development plans set by government organizations and international women councils.
